The deadly explosions that ripped through two popular nightclubs in Kuta on the Indonesian resort island of Bali have been labeled as the worst single terrorist attack since September 11. The Bali bombings killed 202 people and injured more than 300.
The horror started when a small bomb hidden in the backpack of a suicide bomber ripped through Paddy's Bar. The injured immediately fled into the street – exactly what the masterminds of the operation planned. A few seconds later, a second much more powerful 1,000kg bomb, concealed in a white van, was detonated in front of the Sari Club.
Dozens of victims were burned beyond recognition or simply blown to pieces by the power of the massive blasts. The local hospital was unable to cope with the number of injured. The final death toll was 202, mostly holiday-makers in their 20s and 30s who were in the two bars.
More than 300 people suffered horrific burns and other injuries. The largest group among those killed were 88 holiday-makers from Australia. The Bali bombing is sometimes called "Australia's September 11".
