Q: The Mek are locally well-known for witchcraft. After hearing the story of the blood sucking ‘flying woman’, and following your decision to turn down the offer of buying the pig in the first village, did you fear for your safety?
Mark: No, not in the slightest; I don’t believe in vampires, male or female, and nor did I believe that as such a large group we’d be attacked in an area that has had missionary influence for 30 years. I have also a strong faith in the people of West Papua. In my four visits to the island everyone there has been cool.
