Q: The scenery looked amazing in the West Papua mountain range where the Mek live. What was the most magnificent sight you saw there?

Mark: Some of the sunsets were phenomenal, as were the misty dawns. Visually though, my favourite times were when our patch of the hillside was brightly sunlit against the black backdrop of a huge cumulonimbus storm cloud about to drop its load all over us.

That contrast of light always gets me. A pair of eagles that were often to be seen soaring around us in the valley’s up-draughts always did it for me as well. 

And not forgetting the plane that came to take us home at the end!
