Living in occupied territories


Although most of the population was delighted to welcome the Allies as they began to liberate Europe from the Nazis from June 1944, life was still hard for civilians.


There was widespread hunger because of food shortages. Millions of homes and businesses had been destroyed. And a new term, 'Displaced Person', was used to describe the millions who had been made refugees by the conflict and either couldn't, or wouldn't, go home.


The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration was set up in 1943. Over the next 4 years, it helped about 8 million refugees and billions of dollars were spent on aiding recovery.
