Allied Air Raids

In February 1942, the Allies began a 'total warfare' bombing campaign on German civilians, in an attempt to destroy their morale.

Over the next 3 years, 500,000 people were killed and 7 million homes in 161 cities were destroyed.

Air raids became a part of everyday life. Germans were trained to get into one of hundreds of communal shelters within 15 minutes of a warning and every house had a basement shelter by law. Above them, incendiary bombs decimated their homes in 'firestorms'.

Nazi propaganda told German people that the 'master race' must survive and that their cities would be rebuilt more beautifully than before, when Germany became victorious.
