Land Rover Discovery TDI

There are loads of standard Land Rover Discoveries knocking about and they can motor on for many years. But many don’t get the care and attention they need and head to the scrappers.

Mike decides to save an ‘on the cusp’ car, to make a bit more money and have some fun by turning it into an expedition vehicle.

They’ll have some serious work to do, but for a chance to have a play off-road it will be well worth it.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY FACTS

  • The Discovery Series I was introduced to the UK in 1989. Land Rover code-named the vehicle ‘Project Jay’
  • The new model was based on the powertrain and chassis of the Range Rover, but marketed towards a larger segment of the market and given a lower price tag
  • The Discovery was intended to compete with similar Japanese cars, and the Series I model was called the Honda Crossroad in Japan
  • Land Rover employed the Conran Design Group to design the interior of the vehicle. The designers were briefed to ignore current car interior design and re-position the Discovery as a 'lifestyle accessory'
  • The Discovery Series II was launched in autumn 1998, and the Discovery 3 in 2004. The fourth generation Discovery 4 was launched in September 2009
  • The Discovery 4’s TDV6 3.0 litre twin turbo diesel engine delivers 0–60 mph in 9.0 seconds, (0–100 km/h in 9.6 seconds), a 24% improvement over the 2.7 litre model
  • Land Rover's engineers have also refined and improved the handling, on-road ride and off-road capabilities of the Discovery. Changes implemeted include revised steering, improved traction control, larger brakes, new suspension components, and enhancements to the Terrain Response system
