MEET THE TEAMS
The Storm Chasers take to the field in a fleet of customized vehicles, each with its own special role to play in the overall mission of filming tornadoes and collecting severe weather data.
The most formidable is the TIV (Tornado Intercept Vehicle), a heavy, armored juggernaut designed for direct tornado intercepts and close-in IMAX filming.
The DOW (Doppler on Wheels) carries a mobile weather radar system to provide updates about tornado activity.
Finally, the fleet includes three types of smaller chase vehicles — based on pick-up or SUV models. These include the PROBE and SCOUT, which seek out intercept routes and deploy pods (portable instrument probes), and the TVN (TornadoVideos.Net), which operates as a completely independent chase vehicle for both filming tornadoes and deploying probes.
