Shark Weekend - Myth vs Reality

Myth vs Reality

A swimming shark (DCL)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MYTH: Shark populations are healthy and stable.

REALITY: False. Due to overfishing by both targeted shark fisheries and by-catch from other fishing, sharks are on a rapid decline, killed at a rate of 250,000 per day. Some shark populations such as the hammerhead have seen an 89% drop in just the last two decades. As the oceans’ apex predator, they help keep the waters healthy by preying upon injured or sick fish. Without increased protection, shark populations will continue to decrease.
