NASA 50th Anniversary Astronaut Training

Astronaut Training

 (NASA)
Investing $1million per head, NASA prepares its astronauts for everything including resuscitation and emergency surgery in zero gravity, external repairs to spacecraft, to survival training for off course landings in a jungle or the middle of the ocean. ASANS even participate on cultural exchanges with Russian colleagues to prepare them for life aboard the International Space Station.

Highlights of ASCAN basic training include bobbing in the sea for two hours inside a ‘return capsule’, after it has been gently lowered from the side of a ship. Whilst in the water, the capsule is tossed as if in rough seas. Inside the cramped vehicle, the ASCANS change out of their pressurized suits into warm waterproof suits to prepare them for the impending capsule evacuation exercise.

Basic training completed, the fledgling astronauts undergo a raft of specialised ‘proficiency’ training to prepare them for specific missions. This can take a further two years until they finally launch.
