Launched 40 years after Mariner 4, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reached Martian orbit in 2006, where it began conducting reconnaissance and exploration of the planet. The probe is currently peering down on Mars with a host of scientific instruments including a High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera. In 2008 MRO photographed four Martian avalanches, with huge sedimentary debris flows cascading down a cliff. Each of the 16.4 Giga bit images are compressed to 5 Gb before their transmission back to Earth. With this technology MRO is able to transfer more data back to Earth than all previous interplanetary missions combined.
