The Mariner 10 mission was the first planetary mission to Mercury. It arrived in 1974 to sample its environment, atmosphere, surface, and body characteristics. It orbited the planet three times, photographing 35% of the surface. Mariner 10's cameras had a 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi) resolution.

The MESSENGER probe returned to Mercury 30 years after Mariner 10. Compared to its predecessor, its cameras are capable of resolving surface features to 18 meters (59 ft) across.
