NASA 50th Anniversary The Vision

Mars: The Vision

 (NASA)
When humans are technologically and physically capable of travelling to Mars, they will travel in convoy. Each mission to Mars will include three vehicles, two cargo vehicles and one round trip piloted vehicle. NASA believes that cargo should be transported to Mars 26 months ahead of the crews. When the astronauts arrive, they will stay on long-duration trips of up to 18 months. The transit time to or from Mars would take about six months, using the optimum alignment of Earth and Mars. This ingenious shortcut minimizes the length of time crew spend travelling through deep space, the exposure to radiation and micro-gravity.
