NASA 50th Anniversary Hazards

Hazards

 (NASA)
Interplanetary space travellers face two main types of radiation hazard, low energy and high energy protons. Low-energy protons are belched out from sun spots during solar storms. When they collide with the Earth's magnetosphere, they produce breathtaking aurora.

However, to astronauts unprotected by the magnetosphere, these protons can be lethal. Galactic cosmic rays are streams of high energy protons. They flood through interplanetary space, presenting a long term health hazard to astronauts. They cause DNA weakness, rendering astronauts susceptible to cancer.
