NASA 50th Anniversary Exploration

Exploration

 (NASA)
Since von Braun's early writing on the subject, a fleet of Mars orbiters, landers and rovers have recorded, photographed and scanned the atmosphere and surface of the planet. Continued robotic exploration is helping to identify possible landing sites and the availability of ice and other resources useful for manned bases. A Mars Sample Return mission to deliver soil samples to Earth for analysis prior to any manned mission is an ongoing objective.

Meanwhile, NASA's Scout program, a series of long-term investigative robotic missions to Mars, is collecting data from Martian soil and ice. The Phoenix lander, settled on the surface of Mars for three-months, is checking for evidence that the site was previously hospitable to life.
