Human Face Transplant
In 2005, part of a human face was transplanted onto another human being for the first time ever; after Isabelle Dinoire’s face had been mauled by her pet dog she found herself at the frontier of experimental plastic surgery. Just six months on, a military hospital in China surprised the world by announcing that it too had conducted even more ambitious facial surgery.
With unprecedented access to Chinese face transplant surgeon Professor Guo Shuzhong, and the military hospital where he works, this film follows Li Guoxing’s story for over a period of two years; from bear bite victim into the full glare of publicity as he receives the world’s first face transplant to include bone (nose bone). Will his body accept the donor face and how will Li adapt to this new face?
When news reaches Professor Guo that his former patient, Li has had a major set back and suffered a partial rejection, can the Professor heal Li's face before it is rejected completely?
Human Face Transplant will also follow the story of He Jiawei, a patient chosen to be the candidate for the first Chinese full face transplant (a world first). He was nearly burned alive saving the lives of hundreds of fellow factory workers and became horribly disfigured. Will a donor become available and can he and his family cope emotionally in the meantime?
