Discovery Animal Planet

In Too Deep - Animal Planet Borneo

BORNEO
Jamie in the Gomontong Caves in Borneo (DCL)

Jamie finds himself in the Bornean swamp forest of the Kinabatangan to discover how animals survive in a flooded environment. How do they find shelter and food, move around in the sinking mud and flooded environment and also digest the poisonous mangrove?

First up Jamie goes in search of the elusive orangutan, looking at how they move with ease through the trees and then how they build their nests at the end of each day. He gives it a go himself, proving he is not so apt at moving through trees - and after several mosquito bites and weird noises in the jungle Jamie leaves his nest to return to the crew.

Next he investigates how leeches suck your blood, how mudskippers move so easily across the mud and how proboscis monkeys are able to digest the poisonous mangrove. Other animals are able to eat the mangrove by eating mud to help their digestion. Unfortunately when Jamie eats the mud instead of helping his digestion it makes him throw up.

Finally, deep in the Gomontong Caves Jamie finds the cave swifts – birds with the ultimate adaptation. They are able to navigate their way through the darkness of the caves and swamps looking for food. Jamie has to overcome his greatest fear, heights, to descend into the cave with the drop to the ground at 300ft below.
