He had woken in the night to find her missing, and discovered her in the kitchen with a clothes line tied round her neck, hanging from a hook on the door. A friend who had called round on the day she died told police Chrissie had been completely intoxicated at 2.30pm in the afternoon, that Queen had arrived home and put her to bed, checked on her regularly and had given her some food.
Later that night, he explained at his trial, he went up to the room and found her dead, with a rope around her neck. This was when he decided to report the death to the police.
Innocent or guilty?
Two pathologists examined the body. One decided, although unusual, that self-strangulation had occurred. The other concurred, but was not utterly convinced. However, the jury found Queen guilty anyway.
He was sentenced to death, but after appeal it was reduced to life imprisonment. It will probably never be known what really happened that night; was it suicide or murder?
