They also discovered vehicle tracks, and a minute speck of paint on a tree, which was analysed and identified as coming from a particular make of car, allowing them to mobilise a manhunt to find the vehicle, who owned it and match the specks of paint to those missing from the car.

When faced with a mass of evidence, 32 year-old labourer Malcolm Fairley soon confessed to being the Fox. He’d been born the youngest of 10 children in the mining village of Silksworth, now a suburb of Sunderland. As a boy, he was involved in petty crime and from then on was constantly in and out of prison.

The court case lasted just one morning and Malcolm Fairley was sentenced to a total of 82 years in prison.
