This winter two Australian surfing legends have been entirely devoted to tackling the biggest, most terrifying waves they can find, all in the name of filmmaking.
STORM SURFERS combines weather prediction, science and extreme surfing mixed with bravery, as big wave legend, Ross Clarke-Jones and former World Champion, Tom Carroll strive to hunt down the largest storm fronts to surf and conquer.
In an attempt to hunt and surf the biggest wave in Australia this year, the mythical wave in Tasmania called Dangerous Bank and a superhuman effort of organisation, courage - and perhaps stupidity - Ross and Tom traveled 35kms from the mainland by jet-ski to be the first ever to conquer the wave.
Working in conjunction with the two hair-brained surfers is meteorologist Ben Matson, from the surf forecasting website swellnet.com.au. Considered one of the best in the business, Ben uses cutting edge technology to alert Tom and Ross on a daily basis as to the movements of weather systems and swells around the country.
Utilising the latest HD camera technology and GPS tracking devices to measure the toll on the 40 plus year old surfer’s bodies, viewers are positioned right at the front of the surfboard, testing the limits of physical endurance in the pursuit of the ultimate ride.
STORM SURFERS is a 2007 finalist for Discovery Ignite, an initiative which gives independent filmmakers in Australia and New Zealand, the opportunity to pitch documentaries for local co-production.
