" The only way to know for sure if I'm picking an edible wild plant is to spend time in the field with a teacher who knows their stuff. The danger is too great, otherwise. Even referencing books, though a great start, is not enough. Just touching the wrong plant can lead to weeks of misery and pain and when it comes to actually eating something, well, I could kill myself by eating just a teaspoon of the wrong plant. This is what I'm talking about. This is all miner's lettuce. You just pick it and eat it, and it's delicious. Any nourishment I can get into me will help keep my energy levels up. Now, I need to watch out for ticks on the manzanita trees, but these flowers are succulent and tasty. They're almost like like honeysuckle. The stem is a bit bitter, so you just eat the little flowers. Even while gathering wild edibles, the need to remain cautious in my travels remains. One slip could change everything. I'm gonna try something new that a friend of mine showed me recently. Here we go, and take a little walk. All I'm going to do here rather than chew on charcoal is actually just to get this bandana to fill up with water. I'm just gonna squeeze it out and get all the black water. Squeeze into this boil-in-a-bag pouch I still have left. Two more like this. This way it gives me a drink of water filled with charcoal. It might be a little easier to handle than actually chewing on charcoal itself. Here we go. Can you see how dark that is? Okay. So, that's just a little easier on the stomach than actually eating the dried charcoal, and hopefully, that's the whole point as it's to ease my stomach and calm it down and neutralize the acids."
