" This would normally be a fantastic find, not necessarily so in a place like this. I'm going to explain why. Normally, I'd be quite thrilled to find this much snow because it would represent for me some great freshwater, but here in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, these patches of snow that are left behind in the late spring or early summer, if you see, are red, kind of watermelon-colored tinge to the top of them. When you eat that snow, you're in for some serious stomach and bowel problems. I'm not quite certain what it is, whether it's bacterial or fungal, but I'll tell you, it's the one thing you do not want to eat out here. It's snow with a slightly red tinge to it; it will make you sick for quite a while. One way to get around it if you really must and it's the only way to get some water for survival is to simply get rid of the top layers and then go down in the snow a few inches, get away from anything that looks like it might have color to it. Oh yeah. Hmmm. Oh man, cold water in a very dry place. And look at this. The major bonus of coming down here and discovering all this fresh snow and making sure that I stay away from the watermelon-colored snow, is discovering that on the way down is glacier lilies. I didn't come down here with my knife, so just fingers. Here we go. Okay. That's gonna be great. Ohh very tasty huh."
