" It's the last day of the last event of the year at Bonneville. Don Vesco has 1 more chance to break Al Teague's record. Only seconds separate Vesco from his lifelong ambition. The 9-mile course stretches out in front of him."

But just as Vesco clears the measured mile at the blistering 427 mph; there's a jolt and the sound of splintering metal. As he begins to decelerate, Vesco is all too aware that something is wrong. As he closes on his team at the 9 mile marker, Vesco fears the problem could stop him breaking the world record. The gearbox has blown with such force that her hull has been punched right through its housing."
