" As far as competition between the captains, it's fierce, you know. We can be friends when we're in town or maybe having a drink at the bar and talking to one another, but as soon as you leave the dock, as soon as you're on those fishing grounds, the gloves come off. You're enemies and you will lie to each other. You'll cheat and steal if you have to. That's just the nature of the game. Everybody's in it to win. Everybody wants to be number 1, and that's what it's all about. The thing I love most about fishing is the reward, its risk and reward, and especially for us, you know it's been out occupation all our life, and we do take it for granted at times, but there's no feeling like the feeling you get when you fill your boat full of crab or you've got this big pay day coming and you've beat maybe most of of the fleet, in general. You've done better than most. That is a feeling of accomplishment like no other. And I think that is the reward that I get out of it."

" Rock and roll!"

" 76, big ones."

" I enjoy this."

" Fishing can be easy money if it's a short season. We've had 72-hour king crab season where we fished for a hundred thousand pounds over half a million dollars in those 3 to 4 short days, and the guys walked away with some serious dough."

" Nice, huh?"

" Looks like giant dollar signs!"

" Generally, it is not easy money. For the most part and I would say, 99% of the time, it's a living hell, but it's something that you learn to get accustomed to and you're proud of what you do, and it's not about the money. It's a lifestyle. It's about wanting to be a fisherman. It's about wanting to do it well."

" We're gonna rock the crabs tonight! I get that feeling."

" An example of the money that's been made on a short season; I asked the guys if they would go to sleep. They had no intention of lying down. They've been up for about 80 hours. These guys were not going to bed because they pulled out a calculator, they did the math, and they figured they were making around 2,000 dollars an hour. Superstitions play a big role in the fishing industry. They always have. They probably always will. I'm very superstitious, you know. On board the boat, we don't like any horseshoes or any cowboy paraphernalia. We don't allow suitcases on board, you know. Women were known to be bad luck, but I think I'll go easy on that one and what else? Opening a can of anything, upside down, is considered bad luck. "

" You guys gotta bite the head off a herring for good luck. This is all for good luck."

" Yeah, yeah!"

" [unk] season."

" Biting the head off the herring is good luck, you know. We do that every year. We also like to never miss the last part of the season when you're throwing the hook. That's considered bad luck. So, you get these little quirky superstitions and pretty soon they just become, they're imbedded in your mind."

" Yeah!"
