Since the beginning of the 20th century, our daily lives have been radically transformed as our ways of communicating with each other have altered.
Whereas we were once dependent on the spoken or printed word for our information, we now overwhelmingly use radio and television and increasingly, since the 1990s, email and the internet.
It's amazing to think a military objective to create a network to safeguard the flow of information in the event of a crisis has resulted in the triumphant advance of the World Wide Web. Today, over half a billion computers are linked this way.
