Max van Heeswijk electrified the cycling world in 2004 with the best season of his pro career, registering 13 victories and wearing the leader's jersey at the Tours of Murcia, Holland and Spain.

Following two victories in the first stages and the points classification at the Ruta del Sol, van Heeswijk finished a solid 10th at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. He then won two of the first three stages at the Tour of Murcia and the Nokere Koerse before placing fifth at Milan-San Remo. He won the final stage at the Four Days of Dunkerque en route to placing sixth overall. At the Tour of Belgium 10 days later, the Dutch sprinter won the third stage and finished third overall. A solo win at the Wachovia Invitational in the US was followed by a prestigious win at the Tour of Catalunya. At the Tour of Denmark in August, van Heeswijk finished fifth overall, while at the Tour of Holland, he won the first two stages and the points classification. Finally, at the Tour of Spain, van Heeswijk took the race lead after stage two before surrendering the jersey after stage three.

Van Heeswijk's 2003 spring campaign included a stage win at the Tour de l'Ain, a strong ride at the US Pro Championship in Philadelphia and key contributions to the team's winning efforts at the Tours of Holland and Spain.

Van Heeswijk spent 2001-2002 with the Domo-Farm Frites team following a two-year run with Mapei in 1999-2000.
