Jurgen Van Den Broeck continued to build on his first season with the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team last year, spending the bulk of the season racing and learning with his teammates in Europe. He showed some good early season form in Spain at Semana Catalana, coming in 10th in the final time trial and 33rd overall. At the French Circuit de la Sarthe he again showed his TT skills coming in fifth on the days as he and teammates Volodymyr Bileka and Fumy Beppu all topped none other than T-Mobile´s champion Jan Ullrich in an early season battle against the clock.
van den Broeck continued to get plenty of race experience as he lined up for the Amstel Gold Race, the Tour de Romandie, and assisted teammate Yaroslav Popovych to victory at the Tour of Catalunya. He was also part of the team that came over to the USA to race in the Wachovia Series and then flew back to the Netherlands and Belgium for the Tour of Benelux to log a Top 10 in the prologue. van den Broeck closed out his 2005 season with races that included the Tour of Germany, the Championship of Zurich, Paris-Tours, and finally the Italian Tour of Lombardy.
He took part in his first professional season in 2004 and showed promise for what could be a long and successful career in the pro peloton. Then the youngest member of the team, van den Broeck learned a great deal on and off the bike and turned in some solid results that bode well for the future. van den Broeck is the only Belgian to have won a Junior World title, winning the time trial at the 2001 World Championship in Portugal.
Following a handful of early season races, van den Broeck traveled to the US for the Redlands Classic and turned in a fine performance, finishing fifth overall, including second in the prologue, seventh on the stage to Oak Glen and two other top 10 stage finishes. Back in Europe, van den Broeck rode an aggressive Flèche Wallonne and found himself in a late-race break with just over 60km remaining. The group was caught, and he eventually finished just over six minutes back. van den Broeck capped off his spring with a solid sixth place finish at the Tour of Belgium, jumping up from 36th following strong efforts in the Mechelen time trial (eighth) and the final hilly road stage to Eupen (ninth). Lastly, van den Broeck was 12th at the GP Eddy Merckx and led the team with a 16th place finish at the Circuit Franco-Belge.
