Gennady “Mikha” Mikhaylov´s 2005 season saw him continue to grow as an effective domestique for the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team. His early season included completing the five-stage Tour of Qatar and then a solid showing at Milan-San Remo before a lingering illness curtailed his racing for some time. Once recovered, Mikhaylov joined the team for the American Wachovia series in May and then the French Tour de l’Ain in August. Mikhaylov was a key part of the team that took George Hincapie to victory in the late-season GP Plouay again in France and then was on the squad for the five-stage Tour of Poland. He ended his season working for teammate Stijn Devolder in the oh-so-close finish at Paris-Tours where Devolder got caught by the pack with just 100 metres to go to the line.

In his second season with the USPS team in 2004, Gennady Mikhaylov improved on his injury-plagued 2003 campaign, particularly toward the end of the year with strong performances at the Tour de l'Ain and Tour of Spain.

Mikhaylov offered solid support throughout the season, primarily in the Classics and shorter stage races. Following a ninth-place finish in stage two of the Tour de l'Ain, Mikhaylov remained in the top 10 for the remainder of the race and finished in eighth place overall. At the Tour of Spain a few weeks later, Mikhaylov helped defend the team's lead and finished 63rd overall.

His 2003 highlights included a podium finish in the second stage of the Tour de la Région Wallonne and a solid ride in the T-Mobile International in San Francisco. Prior to joining the USPS team, Mikhaylov had two productive years with the Lotto team, spending much of his time working for the team's leaders, including one-day strongman Andrei Tchmil.

During his first season as a pro in 2000, Mikhaylov finished 39th at the Tour of Spain, the top performance on the Farm Frites team.
