A strong Classics rider with a knack for time trials, new team member Leif Hoste brings experience and power to the Discovery Channel team's spring campaign. Hoste, a professional since 1998, has ridden for a handful of Belgian teams over the years, most recently Lotto-Domo.
Hoste prepared for his 2004 spring campaign with a solid ride at the Three Days of the Panne, finishing 11th in the event. At the Tour of Flanders three days later he very nearly pulled off a dream victory after spending 230 of the race's 257km off the front, eventually settling for second place. One week later he placed 12th in Paris-Roubaix, clearly proving his abilities in the sport's most difficult and tactical one-day events. Other highlights from 2004 included second overall at the Tour de l'Ain, third in the time trial at the Belgian championships and eighth at the GP Eddy Merckx. Other top 10 efforts were a pair of sixth-place finishes at Brussels-Ingooigem and the Druivenkoers Ovijse.
In 2003, Hoste was second at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and in the time trial stage at the Tour of Denmark, third in the GP Eddy Merckx and 37th at Paris-Roubaix. Hoste won the Belgian time trial championship in 2001 and a stage at the Tour de la Région Wallonne in 2000. Hoste's first big achievement was winning the opening stage at the 1998 Tour de l'Avenir.
