Discover how top racing drivers use psychological skills to give them the edge.

Drivers need to be able to keep calm and maintain their focus whilst travelling at almost unthinkable speed. Each movement must be rapid and precise, using highly developed coordination. As there is no room for error, drivers use sophisticated psychological techniques to enhance their performance.

Relaxation, goal setting, imagery, mental rehearsal, teambuilding and effective communication are just some of the skills that can enhance driving performance when tailored to the individual. For example, drivers review track maps in order to work out how best to drive the course. This also gives the opportunity to use imagery techniques to give the driver realistic insights into the driving experience.

Others can also direct this process, where the perfect lap can be described to them. Breathing techniques and thought control skills can be crucial during particularly anxious times such as the start of the race and qualifying. There are often many distractions before and during a race, and it is also important that the driver learns to zone in on the things that will help and block out everything else.

An approach that psychologists call self-talk is also employed where key phrases are used (such as “be cool and focus” or “push it!”) depending upon the situation. Short, medium and long-term goals are discussed and recorded, and potential scenarios are considered along with coping strategies.
