Sirius is known as the Dog Star, because it is situated in the eye of the Canis Major (Big Dog) constellation.
It is 8.7 light years away from Earth and we can see it clearly because it is the biggest and brightest star in the sky.
Sirius is twice as big as the Sun and 20 times as bright and can be seen from every inhabited area on the planet. It is a binary star, which means it is one of a pair of stars that are bound together by gravity. The other star, Sirius B, is also known as ‘The Pup’.
