Canopus (Alpha Carinae) is the brightest star in the southern constellation of Carina.
It is believed to be named after the pilot of the ship that sailed the Greek army to the battle of Troy.
Before the Space Age, it was difficult to calculate how distant Canopus was from the Earth and it was originally thought to be 1200 light years away. We now know Canopus is the most powerful star within 700 light years.
It is a ‘supergiant’ star - 15,000 times brighter than the Sun and the second brightest star in the heavens. We would see its yellow-white glow even more brightly if it wasn’t 310 light years from our solar system!
