The Transpacific Yacht Race crosses the ocean from Los Angeles to Honolulu and covers an immense 2,225 nautical miles.
The race has been run for 100 years and currently takes place every two years. It is one of the greatest offshore yachting challenges around, as well as being one of the oldest.
The course runs mainly downwind and participating yachts are famous for using spinnaker sails – balloon-like parachutes that fly in front of their boat to take advantage of the wind-type.
The current record for completing the race stands at six days, 16 hours, four minutes and 11 seconds. It was achieved in 2005 by Hasso Platner, sailing the highly sophisticated yacht, Morning Glory.
