The Sydney to Hobart yachting race takes place on Boxing Day (26th December) each year and covers a distance of almost 630 nautical miles.
It has been running for over 60 years and is organised by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania.
The race takes an average of just over three days to complete. It is described as one of the world’s most gruelling and challenging ocean races and thousands of spectators visit the start and end of the race, in Sydney and Hobart respectively, to catch a glimpse of the competing boats.
The event takes place in the middle of the Australian summer and the finishing party in Hobart is traditionally held on New Year’s Eve.
