From oil spills to ships sinking in rough weather, the 20th century saw a number of disasters at sea, many of which claimed large caused almost immeasurable damage to the environment and claimed large numbers of lives.
Some tragedies were caused by negligence and a disregard for safety regulations. Others have never been explained. What is certain is that we should never underestimate the unparalleled ability of the sea to create havoc from the slightest weakness.
Thankfully most countries now operate comprehensive rescue services. Some are staffed by heroic volunteers who risk their lives to save others.
