Frustrated by American television censorship, Rod Serling created The Twilight Zone as a means of releasing his creative energy through the world of science fiction. The captivating black and white show was directed, narrated and often written by Serling himself, although other science fiction writers including Ray Bradbury contributed.

The Twilight Zone combines drama, science and science fiction elements to create a world where normal and paranormal events happened to ordinary people: events such as discovering that you are the sole survivor of a nuclear attack or that all your neighbours are extraterrestrials. The show’s overwhelming success led to the creation of three films and even a comic strip. TV Guide magazine considered it one of the top 10 television shows of all times. Indeed, the show was one of the first to venture into the world of the graphic novel, as Star Trek would later do.

Rod Serling went on to publish several short stories under the same title, and in 1981, The Twilight Zone Magazine made its publishing debut featuring fantasy and horror stories.
