The Time Tunnel

Nebular gas in space

Created by Irwin Allen, this American colour television series was one of the costliest of 1966. The show’s music was composed by the famous John Williams and its avant-garde special effects won it an Emmy.

The plot concerns a time-travel device, The Time Tunnel, located in a subterranean location in Arizona and created by the US Government as a secret weapon. When costs of the project spiral out of control, one young scientist tests the Time Tunnel to prove its value but becomes lost in time. His colleague follows to rescue him but discovers that the machine can’t handle two passengers. They are both tossed between past and future, having adventures along the way, until the necessary repairs can be made.

To this day, scientists are fascinated by the possibility of travelling through time. The philosophical questions raised by the repercussions of how changing past actions could influence the present as mind-boggling.
