Scientific Inspirations |
 |
It wouldn’t quite be true to say that science fiction is just an exaggeration of science fact. Often, it’s the other way round - science fiction has actually inspired research that has led to significant scientific breakthroughs. For example, the film Matrix Reloaded has inspired important work by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a body specialising in the prevention of deaths and accidents in the workplace.
NIOSH scientists are using the same 3-D technology used in the film to create a virtual army of Agent Smiths; by creating virtual armies of workers and studying them, they can find ways of predicting and preventing accidents and design improved protective equipment for high risk jobs.
