Avebury is one of the largest stone circles in Europe and encloses an entire village within its henge. The henge at Avebury is a ditch approximately 30ft deep with a bank rising to over 15ft. There are 98 standing stones that are misshaped rather than finely chiselled.

Within the stone circle you’ll find the Red Lion pub, well known for being haunted by Florrie, a white lady who wanders from room to room. The story goes that she was killed by her husband during the English Civil War and cannot rest because of the gruesome nature of her death. A ghostly coach and horses is also often heard thundering through the village on moonlit nights. It’s not a welcome sight, because locals believe that it’s a sign of impending death.

Avebury has attracted other weird phenomena including crop circles that mysteriously appear in neighbouring fields every year. These are very intricate in design and some researchers believe that they are messages from alien life forms. This could very well explain the large amounts of UFO sightings that have been reported over Avebury over years. These have even included an alleged alien abduction that took place on the outskirts of the village.
