March 1985 was an important date for fans of superbikes. Suzuki launched a roadgoing version of its GS1000R race bike and practically invented the superbike genre.
Powered by a 106bhp 750cc engine, the bike weighed less than 180kg and offered exhilarating performance. It wasn’t perfect, though, and just a year later a revised version was launched to address handling criticisms.
Generations of GSX-R750 followed, along with 400s, 600s, 1100s and now the 999cc GSX-R1000 flagship atop Suzuki’s superbike range. The 750 lives on, now the only mass-produced Japanese bike of its kind.
