A bike’s engine is its heart and the different types fitted dictate the machine’s character.
Most bikes nowadays are four-stroke petrol, but can be single, twin, triple or four-cylinder units – occasionally more.
The other major variation is engine layout – inline is where all cylinders are in a line and V-formation is where the cylinders are arranged in a V-shape.
Older motorcycles – and many race bikes – use two-stroke units that achieve amazing peak power for their size. The engine is designed to burn oil, though, so emissions regulations have restricted sales in recent years. Some scooters are now electrically powered.
