Rewind to 1907 and motorcycle racing was growing in popularity in Europe. English law banned motorcycles racing on the streets, but the Isle of Man had no such legislation and the TT races were born.
In the first race on the 28 May 1907 there were 25 racers competing at an average speed of 38mph. Today that average is well over 120mph.
You can visit the Isle of Man for the TT weekend, but you will need to reserve well in advance. Make sure you sort out ferry tickets as well as race passes – the trip across the water can be harder to book than the event itself.
