South Asia

Home to the oldest martial art in the world, India is considered by many to be the true birthplace of martial arts. Ancient sculptures and murals depicting fighting stances more than 5,000 years old have been discovered in India.

The development and proliferation of martial arts in China can also be credited to India. Chinese Shaolin chuan, widely regarded as the mother of all Chinese martial arts, can be traced to an Indian Buddhist monk who was a martial arts expert.
