Over the past few decades martial arts movies have grown from attracting a small cult following to something with a much broader appeal.
Originally they weren't known for their cinematography or well-developed storylines – in fact until recently they were synonymous with bad acting and corny plots. The attraction instead has always come from quick-fire action and breathtaking and beautifully choreographed fight scenes.
The elements that first attracted audiences can still be found, but now the plots and performances have improved, and today martial arts feature in a whole range of action movies.
