Europe has a war-torn, martial history and in ancient times had a rich and proud tradition in martial arts.
The legendary Spartans of ancient Greece trained children in martial ways from a very young age. The martial arts of Greek pankration and even Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling stem from such rich traditions.
Today only a few martial arts have been preserved in some form or another. Many martial traditions have adapted to changing technology – the introduction of guns made many of them obsolete. Most of those that remain, like archery, fencing and boxing, have been turned into recreational sports.
