Scott Gustafson has more than 30 years of experience blowing things up. He has made his own substantial mark in the world of explosives, following in the footsteps of his father. Scott's a big fan of the great outdoors, which explains his other great passion - hunting. He’s an excellent shot and is famous for being able to hit just about any target. He sums his life up simply,
“I’m a demolitions expert. I blow up bridges, buildings, you name it, it’s a little different from other jobs. Some assignments might take just one night, others could last several weeks. I might be a few hundred miles away from home, or a few continents away.”
Scott's wife, Prudy Gustafson, is in charge of running the company from the family ranch in Wyoming while Scott is usually working somewhere on the other side of the country. She’s outgoing and has a great sense of humour.
Prudy can be seen on the show firing a rifle in a slightly unusual way. “I’m a right-hand shot, but I aim with my left eye, which is pretty strange,” she explains. She’s the head of a household of three men, when everyone is home.
“Sometimes there’s a little too much testosterone around, and you kind of have to know when to take a step back.”
Dan Gustafson is the eldest son and old school when it comes to work. He’s been tagging along after his father at work since he was four years old, which would explain his passion for the family business. The only problem is that Dan’s newly married and his wife isn’t keen on spending so much time alone while her husband is working, and he works a lot.
“If I like the work I’m doing, I’m the kind of guy who can work 24-hours-a-day non-stop for weeks. Now, Cody here, on the other hand, is the kind of person who doesn’t mind passing the work on to someone else if he can, ‘cause it’s just easier that way,” Daniel teases. “He’s got his way of doing things, and I have mine.” Brother Cody retorts, “he likes to take his time, but if I can find a short cut, I’ll take it.”
Cody Gustafson is the kid brother and unlike the rest of the family he never showed the slightest interest in his father’s profession. Until one day when his brother couldn’t make it to work and he had to fill in. From that moment on he was converted to the blaster obsession and threw himself headlong into the family business. Nowadays he goes by the nickname Cool Blaster.
“It’s just such a rush,” he says, “When you press that button and hear that boom! The sound goes deep down into your body.” His father still can’t believe he went from being the family clown to a serious member of the staff.
“Sometimes we call him and wonder if we’re gonna have to set a small blast to get him out of there,” quips Daddy Blaster.
Steve Rainwater, Scott’s Demtech partner, has more than 25 years experience in the field. He is one of the world’s best known blasters, famous for knowing how to completely demolish a steel structure that looks indestructible. He has three children and a wife who is starting to have some of the same problems that Prudy has lived through with Scott.
“Sometimes it seems the challenge to come up with solutions that actually work just gets bigger all the time, because while some projects are all worked out in advance down to the last detail, there are others where we basically just have to rely on our experience to get through it,” Steve reflects.
