Fact file

TE Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, numbered his seven Brough Superior motorcycles after their maker. He was killed in an accident on George VII

The Brough Superior was the fastest, most expensive and most reliable motorcycle in the world.

Designed by George Brough in Nottingham from 1919 to 1940, it was dubbed 'the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles' by a motorcycle magazine. George, a clever marketing man, used this invaluable compliment in all his advertising copy.

Not content with simply designing and manufacturing his magnificent machines, the multi-talented George also raced them. In 1928 he recorded an unofficial speed of 210kmph (130mph), then the fastest speed in the world on a solo motorcycle.

The Brough really was superior. Every machine was assembled twice, the first time to ensure all the components fitted perfectly. Then it was taken to bits again, painted or plated, and reassembled.

The Brough Superior ceased production when the Second World War began, but George continued to personally help out his customers for many years afterwards.
