Early career:
John wanted to be in a punk band and needed a stage name to match his aggressive image. He chose Sid Vicious after his flatmate Lydon’s pet hamster, Sid the Vicious, who had a habit of biting people.
Although he had virtually no musical talent, Sid started playing first with early punk band The Flowers of Romance and then with Siouxsie & the Banshees. He was a well-known figure on the punk scene, a fanatical Sex Pistols fan and a close friend of the Bromley Contingent, a group of Sex Pistols fans whose dress and attitude influenced punk fashion.
