Teen Idol:

The film that catapulted River into the mainstream was Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me (1986). His performance won instant acclaim, although his sheltered upbringing had left him totally unprepared for the attention it brought. The role of Charlie Fox followed, in The Mosquito Coast (1986) with Harrison Ford – a tale that bore a striking resemblance to River’s own childhood. River’s enigmatic style and good looks landed him a string of roles in off-beat films including his Oscar-nominated part in Sidney Lumet’s Running on Empty (1988), I Love you to Death (1990), My Own Private Idaho (1991) and Dogfight (1991). He also found time to form his own band, Aleka’s Attic.
