Early life:

Natalie Wood was born to Russian parents in San Francisco on 20th July 1938. She was christened Natalyia Zakharenko but the family soon changed its name to the less foreign-sounding Gurdin.

When Natalyia was four years old her parents moved to the pretty coastal town of Santa Rosa, where director Irving Pichel was casting for his film Happy Land. Natalyia’s mother, hungry for the fame she had never managed to achieve as a ballerina, pushed her child to the front. Young Natalyia won her first fleeting role, without any dialogue or a credit, as a child who drops an ice cream.
