Child star:
Spurred on by her daughter’s bit part, Maria Gurdin moved the family to Hollywood.
Success didn’t come easily and Maria tirelessly dragged her daughter around the studios until, aged 7, director Irving Pichel, auditioned her once again. Pichel gave the child her first speaking part in his film Tomorrow is Forever (1946) and renamed her Natalie Wood. A star was instantly born and Natalie was on the cover of Life magazine even before the film was released. Roles came thick and fast and she starred in 20 movies by the age of 16, including 1947 smashes The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and Miracle on 34th St.
